Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence
Hi there,

This week, the Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP, is travelling to the United States and India.

In the United States, Minister Conroy will hold high-level talks with representatives from the US Administration and Congress to advance the implementation of the pathway for Australia to acquire conventionally-armed nuclear-powered submarines through the AUKUS partnership.

He will also visit the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Connecticut, where submarines, including the Virginia class, are produced for the US Navy.

In India, Minister Conroy will attend the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Varanasi.

Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members.

Responsible AI in Australia: Have Your Say!

The Government is taking further steps to ensure the growth of artificial intelligence technologies (AI) in Australia is safe and responsible. That could be through either or both:

  • voluntary approaches, like tools, frameworks and principles
  • enforceable regulatory approaches, like laws and mandatory standards

Your feedback will be used to inform consideration across government on any appropriate regulatory and policy responses.

Submissions close 26 July 2023.

The Endeavour Awards are presented annually by Manufacturers’ Monthly.

Nominating criteria and instructions:

  • Nominating is free,and must be completed using this online form by 11:59pm Friday 6 October 2023.
  • Nominations are unable to be withdrawn once nominations are closed.
  • Your nomination must be completed in one sitting; a partially completed form cannot be saved and reopened at a later date.
  • All products and/or technologies must be manufactured and/or commercially available in Australia.
  • Companies and sites nominated must operate within Australia.
  • Executives nominated must reside and work in Australia.
  • All nominations must be accompanied by a high resolution image (at least 1MB in size) suitable for print publication.
  • Please have any supporting documentation (i.e. equipment specifications, photographs, marketing materials) ready to upload; file sizes shouldn’t exceed 5MB.
  • All finalists are required to have a representative at the Gala Awards evening should they be successful. To assist with this, all finalists will be provided with one complimentary ticket to attend.
Cyber Security and DISP Workshop Thursday, 22 June 2023

The Victorian Government in partnership with Michael Fairweather & Associates will deliver the fourth and final free in person workshop, ‘Cyber Security and DISP’ at the Investment Centre Victoria on Thursday 22 June from 8:30AM to 12:00PM. The workshop will be delivered by Dean Franklin from Willyama, a partner of iDiC and a cyber security specialist and will help will help businesses understand appropriate cyber security requirements, how to protect your business and what Defence expects.

The workshop will enable businesses to:
  • Share knowledge and create policies in relation to workplace cyber security
  • Manage information securely from a personal and workplace perspective
  • Identify threats, vulnerabilities, and risks and appropriately respond to, and report online security threats and
  • Understand the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP), its membership requirements, and the steps needed to become a member.

Whilst attendance at the event is free, registration is mandatory. Interested businesses should register here.

    • Based on recommendations in the Defence Strategic Review (DSR), the Australian Government has appointed an inaugural Chief of Personnel in the ADF. MAJGEN Natasha Fox will be promoted to Lieutenant General and will commence in her new role on 5 June 2023. See more here.  
    • Defence, BAE Systems Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia and Saab Australia signed a Combat System Integration Collaboration Agreement and set up The Combat System Integration – Integrated Project Team to grow a sovereign industrial capability for the Navy’s major surface vessels.     • The Australian Government has appointed Former Secretary of the Department of Defence, Dennis Richardson; former Secretary of the Department of Finance, Rosemary Huxtable; and former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Richard Maude, as the External Advisory Panel to oversee the implementation of the DSR recommendations.     • A new $3.2 million Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence at Melbourne Polytechnic’s Heidelberg campus has officially opened. The centre will train Victoria’s next generation of engineers to enter the workforce and support a range of industries including defence and aerospace. See more here.
    • Marand Precision Engineering and Rheinmetall have extended their manufacturing partnership worth $50 million. Marand will manufacture LANCE digital turrets, hull components and vehicle attachments in Geelong for export via their respective Australian supply chains. See more here.
    • In a first for cold spray additive manufacturing technology, Melbourne additive manufacturing company SPEE3D has been given the green light by the US Navy to use its metal cold spray technology for use in critical submarine systems. See more here.
    • Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition organiser, AMDA Foundation Limited (AMDA) has launched the 2023 Innovation Awards. The awards cover three categories which this year include a boosted cash prize of $50,000 to each of the SME and Young Innovator winners. See more here.  
    • Federal, state and territory skills and training ministers met in Darwin to progress negotiations towards a new National Skills Agreement (NSA) to support a modern and responsive skills sector.  See more here.
    • Penske Australia will provide local industry support for diesel engine sustainment for the Australian Defence Force after signing a $190 million five-year contract with Defence. The contract will support more than 90 jobs across seven Australian sites, including Victoria. See more here.
    • A series of blast tests on the AS9 and AS10 Huntsman family were successfully concluded last month with ongoing support from Hanwha Defense Australia. The AS9 and AS10 vehicles are expected to be built at the Hanwha vehicle Centre of Excellence near Avalon Airport. See more here.
    • AUKUS representatives from Australia, the United Kingdom and United States have observed the successful demonstration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomy at the Upavon Airfield in the UK – the first major joint test under the AUKUS pact. See more here.
    • Following a meeting during the G7 summit, the Quad partners (Australia, India, Japan and the US) have published the Quad Cybersecurity Partnership: Joint Principles for Secure Software which outlines a set of guidelines government agencies and contractors will be required to meet.     • AustCyber with the support of the Australian Government has announced the launch of its latest project, the AustCyber Innovation Network. The new network is aimed at a whole-of-Australia approach. See more here.
    • Singapore startup, SunGreenH2 has launched a research and development (R&D) and manufacturing operation in Clayton, creating more than 30 high-skilled jobs. See more here.  
    • ViaSat completed its acquisition of Inmarsat. The Asia-Pacific Headquarters of the global communications company are in Melbourne. See more here.
    • The New Zealand Defence Force has welcomed the arrival of 18 Victorian-built Bushmaster NZ5.5 protected mobility vehicles for the NZ Army. The fleet is the first of 43 vehicles to replace Pinzgauer armoured high-mobility all-terrain military utility vehicles. See more here.  
    • The Australian Government Critical Technologies Statement has been released with information session on 10:00 – 11:00am Thursday 8 June. See more here.  
    • Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships Program – Round 2 is open. The Program encourages adoption of emerging aviation technologies and renewable or low emission aviation propulsion systems. Applications close 27 July 2023. Co-funding is required. See more here.

      Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program

      The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.

      The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.

      Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.



      ODIS provides a range of grants to support defence industry businesses. These grants help Australian small and medium enterprises grow to meet Defence capability needs and join global defence industry supply chains.
