Yesterday, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon. Richard Marles was hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace at the commissioning of HMS Anson at BAE Systems, Barrow, UK.

It was announced that Royal Australian Navy submariners will be trained aboard the newly commissioned HMS Anson, an Astute-Class submarine as part of the AUKUS partnership.


Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members. We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

Victorian Land Systems Fund Announcement

On the 25th August, the Victorian Government announced the Victorian Land Systems Fund – Supply Chain Uplift Program.

The program is intended to support local businesses seeking to win work as part of the Land 8116 Self-Propelled Howitzer Program with Hanwha Defense Australia.

Applications will open mid-September and close on 30 June 2024 or when funds have been exhausted, whichever comes first.

Interested businesses are encouraged to review the Guidelines and FAQs and talk to Hanwha before applying.

Non-Victorian businesses that are interested in establishing operations in Victoria to participate in the Land 8116 program and are seeking investment facilitation or funding support should contact defence@ecodev.vic.gov.au.

2022 Defence Information and Communications Technology Strategy & Deefence Cyber Security Strategy Launched

Assistant Minister for Defence, the Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP launched the 2022 Defence Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy and the Defence Cyber Security Strategy at a Defence ICT industry forum today.

Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite said a key element of both strategies was the importance of enduring partnerships for Defence, in order to leverage the experience and expertise of industry, academia, allies and regional partners.

Finalists Announced for 2022 Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Employment Awards

Australia’s top veteran employers, employees and entrepreneurs are being celebrated today as finalists for the 2022 Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Employment Awards are unveiled.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh said the awards provide the opportunity not only to recognise organisations that actively recruit, employ and support veterans, but celebrate the successes of veterans in their careers post service.

    • Through DMTC, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) has released a request for proposal seeking innovative applied research proposals supporting development of high temperature structures and sub-assemblies. Proposals are due 9 September. See more here.
    • DSTG is looking to make direct contact with leadership in Humanities and Social Science focused faculties to gauge interest in working with them to better understand extant capabilities in analysing Socio-Technical Futures. See more here.
    • Defence is partnering with the maritime industry and academia to establish a world-leading research facility for Biofilm Research and Innovation. Research support will include experts from several international and domestic universities including Swinburne University of Technology. See more here.
    • Defence announced a new partnership between the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Department of Defence and the Phoenix Australia Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health has led to world-first research and the development of an innovative new treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).     • Lockheed Martin Australia’s Research and Development team, STELaRLab, in collaboration with the RAAF and DSTG, successfully tested Integrated Air and Missile Defence decision support capabilities using a live, virtual, constructive training system. See more here.  
    • Aerospace composites manufacturer Quickstep agreed final terms for a multi-year $151 million order from Northrop Grumman to supply centre fuselage components for the F-35 joint strike fighter aircraft. See more here.

      In partnership with the Victorian State Government, Lockheed Martin Australia manages a secure facility designed to enable Victoria’s innovation community to better engage with classified Defence and National Security programs. The first facility of its type in Australia, the Victorian Common User Facility is a key initiative in creating new business opportunities for Victoria’s innovation sector.

      Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program

      The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.

      The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.

      Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.

      Human Performance Week provides an opportunity for Defence, academia, industry, and other agencies to come together to discuss human sciences research and its application.
             In 2022, Human Performance Week brings together two events:

      • The Defence Human Sciences Symposium (DHSS), the principal Australian forum for those interested in the application of human sciences research to enhance Defence capability, an

      • The Human Performance Research Network Symposium (HPRnet). HPRnet is an established network of universities that draws together multidisciplinary teams from around the country who are co-invested in the delivery of significant outcomes for Defence. The symposium brings together existing network members and those with an interest in human performance to hear about the latest developments in human performance research for the military.
