Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence

Hi Juanita,

ADA Victoria would like to congratulate ADF personnel recognised in this year's Australia Day Honours List.

A leader in the response to the COVID-19 crisis and a long-serving Rear Admiral are among the Defence personnel recognised in this year’s Australia Day honours and awards for their outstanding service. The Australia Day honours list recognises 30 ADF personnel in the Order of Australia’s military division and 64 ADF personnel for distinguished and conspicuous service.

Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members.

We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Defence & Industry Study Course 2023 Applications Open

Applications for DISC 2023 opened on Monday 16 January 2023 and close at 5pm AEST on Monday 6 March 2023.

The primary aim of the Defence & Industry Study Course (DISC) is to promote a better understanding and engagement of both Defence and industry in order to improve Australia's Defence industry capability and thus national security.

The course delivers Australian Defence Force (ADF), Defence, other Federal and State agencies, and industry executives with an enhanced understanding of Defence business whilst also improving the collective knowledge of Australia's defence industry.

Defence recognises industry as a fundamental input to capability and as such industry will play a significant role in developing, delivering and sustaining the capabilities described in the 2020 Defence Strategic Update and Force Structure Plan and through the upcoming Defence Strategic Review. DISC brings together and exposes participants to key aspects of the environment in which Defence and industry will need to navigate, collaborate and partner in order to successfully deliver and sustain capability for our armed forces.

DISC is an annual course delivered in four one week Modules over approximately seven months. Each DISC is comprised of a balanced mix of ADF officers from all three services together with Australian Public Service employees from various Defence groups, and industry participants who are selected to represent the different sectors, states/territories and scale of company (SMEs/Primes).

The course provides a professional environment for forging lasting networks with cohort members together with extensive networking opportunities with key decision makers from within Defence, Government and industry. Participants will also work in syndicates to undertake a research activity and develop deliverables centred on current issues.
Defence Exports Controls Outreach Event

Defence Export Controls (DEC) will be hosting a free outreach event in Melbourne on Monday 27 February 2023 (Industry), and Tuesday 28 February 2023 (Universities/Academia).

Outreach is aimed at industry, Universities and research institutions involved in the export, supply, publication or other movement of military and dual-use goods and technology. The program aims to raise awareness of Australian defence export control law by looking at what is required of exporters, what to expect when applying, and the export landscape. The event will involve presentations from representatives across the Australian Sanctions Office, Australian Border Force and ASIO.

This will be a hybrid event, with participants able to attend face to face or virtually. Whilst the event is free, please ensure you register using the links provided below.

A Reminder to Have Your Say in the Design & Implementation of the National Reconstruction Fund

In the 2022-23 October budget the government committed $15 billion to establish the National Reconstruction Fund (NRF).

The NRF will provide finance to projects in these priority areas to leverage Australia’s natural and competitive strengths:

  • medical science
  • transport
  • value-add in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors
  • value-add in resources
  • defence capability
  • enabling capabilities

The NRF will provide a range of finance options including:

The NRF will be an independent financier that operates commercially to deliver a positive rate of return. It will be governed by a board who will make independent investment decisions guided by an investment mandate.

Consultation is now open on the design and implementation of the NRF and the government is keen to hear from:

  • industry
  • unions
  • communities
  • state and territory governments.
