Australia's first MQ-4C Triton

The Government has unveiled Australia’s first MQ-4C Triton Remotely Piloted Aircraft System – ‘AUS 1’ – to be operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Revealed at RAAF Base Tindal by the Deputy Prime Minister, the MQ-4C Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft that will provide persistent surveillance across Australia’s maritime approaches. The aircraft will complement the ADF’s crewed P-8A Poseidon fleet as a ‘family of systems’ to undertake enhanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of Defence operations.

The four MQ-4C Triton aircraft will be based at RAAF Base Tindal, Northern Territory and operated by the Air Force’s reformed No. 9 Squadron, located at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.

The MQ-4C Triton project represents a $900 million investment in Australian industry for facilities construction, network integration, engineering, logistics, component manufacture and sustainment services.

As part of this investment, Defence has signed an interim sustainment support contract valued at approximately $220 million with Northrop Grumman Australia, creating 110 technical jobs for highly skilled workers in South Australia and in the Northern Territory as a result of the project.
Australian Defence Force Launches Fresh Recruitment Campaign

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has launched the first integrated recruitment advertising campaign to highlight the diverse career opportunities available across maritime, land, air, space and cyber.

A career in the ADF is unlike any other job, and that is the message this campaign is sending to Australians who want to make a difference to pursue a career in uniform.

The ‘unlike any other job’ campaign will run from today online, on social media, digital audio, television and cinema. For the first time, the campaign will also be displayed on 3D billboards in Sydney and Melbourne.

The latest campaign comes one year after the launch of ADF Careers, which brings Navy, Army and Air Force recruiting under a single banner.

This fresh approach has helped raise awareness about the more than 250 different roles available across the ADF, including a number of new roles to support Australia’s pathway to acquiring a conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability through AUKUS.

To further bolster recruitment, Defence has recently opened a new Mobile ADF Careers Centre, which serves to engage with regional and rural candidates.

The mobile centre has recently completed tours across regional Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales; with a Queensland tour currently underway.

A pop-up ADF Careers Centre will also soon visit regional Victoria, starting in Geelong during August, followed by Bendigo and Ballarat.

Government Invest in Collins Class Submarines Sustainment

The Government has signed a new four-year sustainment contract with ASC Pty Ltd, securing South Australia and Western Australia as the centres of excellence for the sustainment of the Collins class submarines.

This new contract will provide work valued at over $2.2 billion, directly ensuring job security for more than 1,100 highly skilled workers at Osborne, South Australia and Henderson, Western Australia. It is part of the Albanese Government’s $4 to $5 billion commitment to keeping the Collins class submarines as a potent strike and deterrence capability.

Significantly, this contract follows the recently announced life-of-type extension (LOTE) program for the Collins class submarines, which will commence with HMAS Farncomb in 2026 at Osborne, South Australia.

Australian industry will have significant opportunities to maintain one of the most capable conventionally‑powered submarines in the world, with around 90 per cent of the Collins class’ platform sustainment budget being spent in Australia.

The new contract directly supports employment for more than 700 people in South Australia and 400 people in Western Australia. The LOTE program provides work for about 500 people in South Australia.
