Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence

Hi Juanita,

On Monday the Government released the public version of the Defence Strategic Review (the Review), the Government’s response to the Review, and the National Defence Statement 2023.

The Government’s response to the Review sets out a blueprint for Australia’s strategic policy, defence planning and resourcing over the coming decades.

The Government has agreed, or agreed in-principle with further work required, to the public Review recommendations, and has identified six priority areas for immediate action:

  • Acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines through AUKUS to improve our deterrence capabilities;
  • Developing the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) ability to precisely strike targets at longer-range and manufacture munitions in Australia;
  • Improving the ADF’s ability to operate from Australia’s northern bases;
  • Initiatives to improve the growth and retention of a highly skilled Defence workforce;
  • Lifting our capacity to rapidly translate disruptive new technologies into ADF capability, in close partnership with Australian industry; and
  • Deepening of our diplomatic and defence partnerships with key partners in the Indo-Pacific.

The public version of the Defence Strategic Review is available at: https://www.defence.gov.au/about/reviews-inquiries/defence-strategic-review.

Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members.

We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Government to Strengthen Partnership with Defence Industry to Implement the Review

On Monday, the Government began implementing key recommendations of the Defence Strategic Review.

As the Review makes clear, a genuine partnership between the Government, industry and unions will be critical to growing Australia’s defence industry and speeding up the acquisition of vital defence capabilities.

The Review recommends significant reforms to the way Defence is structured, postured and operates, to respond to our current strategic circumstances – including reprioritisation of the Defence Integrated Investment Program (IIP).

The Review is clear that too much time has been lost on key defence acquisitions and capabilities. Our strategic circumstances demand these issues be addressed urgently.

The Government has directed Defence to immediately begin work to:

  • Remove unnecessary barriers to acquisitions.
  • Streamline strategically important projects and low-complexity procurements.
  • Make faster decisions in the delivery of Defence projects.
  • Develop practical solutions in close consultation with defence industry.

Later this year, and in order to build the defence industry needed to support the ADF, the Government will release a Defence Industry Development Strategy that will set out:

  • The strategic rationale for a sovereign defence industrial base.
  • More targeted and detailed Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities.
  • A plan to grow industry’s workforce to deliver a viable industrial base and increase Australia’s defence exports.
  • Reforms to defence procurement to support the development of Australian defence industry and respond to the Review.
  • Mechanisms to improve security within defence businesses.
  • A detailed implementation plan.

This will be critical step in delivering the reforms and capabilities identified in the Defence Strategic Review.
Government to Establish Local Missile Manufacturing and Acquire More Missile Systems

The Government is committing $4.1 billion to acquire more long-range strike systems and manufacture longer-range munitions here in Australia, delivering on the priorities of the Defence Strategic Review.

A key recommendation of the Review is the need to accelerate and expand weapons systems, including land-based maritime strike and long-range missile launchers. Complemented by investments to replenish our guided weapons and explosive ordnance (GWEO) stocks and to establish sovereign missile and munition manufacturing facilities in Australia.

The Albanese Government is moving immediately to respond to the Review and committing real funding to these programs and capabilities.

We are reshaping the Australian Army and modernising it for the current strategic circumstances.

This investment in key capabilities will see the Australian Army’s current range for artillery grow from 40 kilometres to in excess of 500 kilometres.
Austrade and Team Defence Australia Launch Adroita Aukus White Paper

The white paper is called Micro-Partnerships in the Age of AUKUS and was written by ADROITA’s Founder and CEO, Sarah Pavillard. It outlines how Australian, American and British small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) can form global micro-partnerships to be stronger together and flourish in the Australian defence sector while strengthening global security. It is an urgent call to action for AUKUS SME businesses to collaborate, cooperate, and co-work to deliver on the promise of the AUKUS nation-to-nation mega-partnership.

The paper also highlights how AUKUS-enabled micro-partnerships must scale up to deliver outcomes and take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow revenue, capability, and employment among the Australian, British and American defence sectors while contributing to a safer, more stable, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific.
