Applications Open For 2023 Prince of Wales Award
Applications are now open for Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reserve personnel to apply for the 2023 Prince of Wales Award, in recognition of the contribution made by Reservists and their civilian employers to Defence capability.
The Prince of Wales Award scheme acknowledges selected Reservists and their civilian employers for their commitment to, and support of, ADF service. It provides financial assistance for SERCAT 3–5 members of up to $8000, to undertake a professional development activity that benefits their civilian employment or profession.
The activity could be a formal qualification, attendance at a course or conference, or another professional development activity.
ADF Reservists who hold a substantive rank of Leading Seaman or Corporal to Lieutenant Commander, Major or Squadron Leader, regardless of trade or specialisation, may apply for the Award.

Save the Date!!
We’re happy to announce that Canberra’s premiere Defence + Industry engagement event, the D+I Conference will return to the National Convention Centre in Canberra on Thursday 27 July 2023.
D+I 2023 will deliver thought provoking presentations with a mix of Senior Defence and industry presenters inviting active participation from delegates through live questioning during our Q&A panel sessions.
Kicking off with a welcome reception on the evening prior to the conference, D+I provides delegates with ample networking opportunities to engage and develop invaluable relationships across the Defence and industry landscape.
The key timings for D+I 2023 are as follows:
Wednesday 26 July
- 1600 – 1800 – Pre registration and event badge collection
- 1800 – 2000 - Welcome reception and industry networking event
Thursday 27 July
- 0830 – 1700 - D+I Conference
Location - Both events will be held at the National Convention Centre in Canberra.
While we finalise our program and speakers, please ensure you save 26-27 July 2023 in your diaries and share this information throughout your organisation so you don’t miss out!

Business Innovation Survey 2023
The Business Innovation Survey collects information from Victorian businesses to better understand what innovation looks like across different parts of the state. The results of the survey will help the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR) create more effective place-based policies to support innovation by Victorian businesses.
The survey is expected to take around 10-15 minutes to complete and is a great opportunity to help inform future innovation policies and tailor support to businesses in your region.
This survey will close midnight, Sunday 16 July 2023.
Economic advisory firm Sapere has been engaged by DJSIR to assist with management of this survey and analysis of the results.

Innovate to Grow: Advanced Manufacturing
This program is open to Australian SMEs looking to build their R&D capabilities using advanced manufacturing, or those who need advanced manufacturing to create or improve a product or enhance efficiency in their business.
The program will help you refine your innovation idea and step you through how to turn this into a research and development opportunity.
You will also be exposed to industry knowledge, hear from innovation and industry experts and have access to networking opportunities with researchers and R&D mentors.
It's a great opportunity to work alongside other like-minded SMEs and build your networks.
The course will help you to:
- Identify your innovation opportunities
- Refine your value proposition
- Understand the R&D viability
- Help you build your business case
- Provide guidance on how to prepare a strong funding application
The program is made up of virtual webinars and self-paced learning.

Australian Space Industry Capability Database
The Australian Space Industry Capability database will open for industry submissions from mid-July. Companies can upload information on their:
• Location • Capability • Workforce
The database has been developed by SIAA and is supported by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), the Australian Space Agency, the Office of Defence Industry Support and SmartSat CRC.

From Defence: - Based on recommendations in the Defence Strategic Review (DSR), the Australian Government has appointed an inaugural Chief of Personnel in the ADF. MAJGEN Natasha Fox will be promoted to Lieutenant General and will commence in her new role on 5 June 2023. See more here.
- Defence, BAE Systems Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia and Saab Australia signed a Combat System Integration Collaboration Agreement and set up The Combat System Integration – Integrated Project Team to grow a sovereign industrial capability for the Navy’s major surface vessels. See more here.
- The Australian Government has appointed Former Secretary of the Department of Defence, Dennis Richardson; former Secretary of the Department of Finance, Rosemary Huxtable; and former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Richard Maude, as the External Advisory Panel to oversee the

Other News - A new $3.2 million Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence at
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Heidelberg campus has officially opened. The centre will train Victoria’s next generation of engineers to enter the workforce and support a range of industries including defence and aerospace. See more here.
- Marand Precision Engineering and Rheinmetall have extended their manufacturing partnership worth $50 million. Marand will manufacture LANCE digital turrets, hull components and vehicle attachments in Geelong for export via their respective Australian supply chains. See more here.
- In a first for cold spray additive manufacturing technology, Melbourne additive manufacturing company SPEE3D has been given the green light by the US Navy to use its metal cold spray technology for use in critical submarine systems. See more here.
- Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition organiser, AMDA Foundation Limited (AMDA) has launched the 2023 Innovation Awards. The awards cover three categories which this year include a boosted cash prize of $50,000 to each of the SME and Young Innovator winners. See more here.
- Federal, state and territory skills and training ministers met in Darwin to progress negotiations towards a new National Skills Agreement (NSA) to support a modern and responsive skills sector. See more here.
- Penske Australia will provide local industry support for diesel engine sustainment for the Australian Defence Force after signing a $190 million five-year contract with Defence. The contract will support more than
90 jobs across seven Australian sites, including Victoria. See more here.
- A series of blast tests on the AS9 and AS10 Huntsman family were successfully concluded last month with ongoing support from Hanwha Defense Australia. The AS9 and AS10 vehicles are expected to be built at the Hanwha vehicle Centre of Excellence near Avalon Airport. See more here.
- AUKUS
representatives from Australia, the United Kingdom and United States have observed the successful demonstration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomy at the Upavon Airfield in the UK – the first major joint test under the AUKUS pact. See more here.
- Following a meeting during the G7 summit, the Quad partners (Australia, India, Japan and the US) have published the Quad Cybersecurity Partnership: Joint Principles for Secure Software which outlines a set of guidelines government agencies and contractors will be required to meet. See more here.
- AustCyber with the support
of the Australian Government has announced the launch of its latest project, the AustCyber Innovation Network. The new network is aimed at a whole-of-Australia approach. See more here.
- Singapore startup, SunGreenH2 has launched a research and development (R&D) and manufacturing operation in Clayton, creating more than 30 high-skilled jobs. See more here.
- ViaSat completed its acquisition of Inmarsat. The Asia-Pacific Headquarters of the global communications company are in Melbourne. See more here.
- The New Zealand Defence Force has welcomed the arrival of 18 Victorian-built Bushmaster NZ5.5 protected mobility vehicles for the NZ Army. The fleet is the first of 43
vehicles to replace Pinzgauer armoured high-mobility all-terrain military utility vehicles. See more here.
- The Australian Government Critical Technologies Statement has been released with information session on 10:00 – 11:00am Thursday 8 June. See more here.

Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program
The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.
The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.
Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.
