Defence+Industry Conference and Awards CANCELLED
Hi there,

The Defence+Industry (D+I) team had announced on the 7th of September, that the D+I Conference and Awards slated to take place in October has been cancelled. The D+I team cites that the current state and territory lockdowns, interstate travel restrictions and venue limitations have made both the conference and awards unfeasible in 2021 - even in a virtual format.

The D+I team have made it known that they hope to host the conference and awards in 2022.

To make sure the damage from COVID is minimised there are two messages from the Government:
  • If the latest lockdown is having an impact on your ability to deliver on defence related contracts you should contact Defence’s COVID-19 Task Force Industry Support Cell on covid19.isc@defence.gov.au

Announcements
New Defence Science Institute and DSTG research grant

The Victorian Defence Science Institute has partnered with the Defence Science and Technology Group to foster new early warning research via the “DSI-Hazardous Agent Challenge (HAC)”, unveiling the list of successful recipients.

The DSI expects that the funding will not only allow the development of new sensors, but also encourage innovations in multidisciplinary teams to tackle potential future threats in various fields.

The award, valued at $1.34M, aims to bring together experts from a multitude of disciplines, such as industry, academia, and end-user communities to discover solutions for CBRN research.

According to a release from the DSI, the four successful projects under the DSI-HAC are:

  • University of Melbourne and Flame Security International: Gram-scale infra-red spectrometer concept for multi-analyte airborne chemical threat detection;
  • Monash University, University of Melbourne: Wireless platform for stand-off detection of chemical hazards;
  • University of Melbourne, Monash University, Ideation Product Solutions: Sensing platform for defence-relevant airborne chemical threats; and
  • Monash University, CSIRO: Porous photonic micro cavities – enhanced in-field toxic chemical sensor.

Extended Support for Victorian Businesses

The Commonwealth and Victorian Governments have announced on the 4th of September a jointly funded support package to provide a critical four-week boost to small and medium-sized Victorian businesses most impacted by current public health restrictions.

The joint package of up to $2.34 billion will deliver certainty to around 175,000 Victorian businesses as the state bands together to restrict the spread of infection while the drive to vaccinate 70 per cent, then 80 per cent, of the population accelerates.

The business support payments confirmed today cover a four-week period ending on Thursday 30 September.

The vast majority of payments will be deposited automatically into businesses’ bank accounts, while a new tiered payments system for the Business Costs Assistance Program will allow for higher payments to businesses with more workers.

Banks' COVID-19 Relief Program

The ACCC has granted interim authorisation to allow the Australian Banking Association (ABA) and banks to continue to work together on a variety of existing COVID-19 related relief packages, so they can respond to any further outbreaks as required.

The COVID-19 related relief packages allow for temporary and limited coordination between the ABA and participating banks to defer loan repayments and waive certain banking fees for small businesses impacted by the pandemic. The coordination also allows banks to facilitate second phase financial recovery and maintain access to banking services for small businesses.

Small businesses are encouraged to contact their bank to discuss the COVID-19 related relief package.
