Defence Global Competitiveness Grant Re-opens

Grants to help small to medium sized Australian businesses to invest in projects that build their defence export capability.

A grant of $15,000 to $150,000 for up to 50% of the cost of investing in projects that build export capability to build a stronger, more sustainable and globally competitive Australian defence industry. The maximum project period is 12 months.
Government Announces Approval for the Land Force Level Electronic Warfare
Project


On the 18th of July 2022, Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP, announced Government approval for the Land Force Level Electronic Warfare Project valued at nearly $75 million.

The Project Land 555 Phase 6 will modify existing Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles and install Electronic Warfare systems into these vehicles.

Minister Conroy said the systems would improve the Australian Defence Force’s ability to monitor and control the electronic environment and, where necessary, deny or degrade the electronic systems of adversaries.

The Government has awarded delivery of the Force Level Electronic Warfare System project to Raytheon Australia Pty Ltd.

Innovation Awards Nominations Now Open - $30,000 Awards Celebrate Australian Innovation

The LAND FORCES 2022 Innovation Awards are now open for entries. A copy of the announcement is attached.

Companies and individuals can enter by going to the Innovation Awards page on the LAND FORCES 2022 web site: https://landforces.com.au/innovation/index.asp. The Awards are open only to Australian companies and young innovators.

Entries close on 8 August, so time is short. But the rewards are significant: the winning SME and Young Innovator will each receive a cheque for $15,000.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

      • LAND FORCES 2022 National Innovation Award
      • LAND FORCES 2022 SME Innovation Award ($15,000 cash prize)
      • LAND FORCES 2022 Young Innovator Award ($15,000 cash prize)

The judges also have the discretion to award a High Recommendation to entries of sufficiently high quality.

The Awards will be presented at LAND FORCES 2022 on Tuesday 4 October at the Brisbane Convention and Convention Centre (BCEC).

    • Following the Prime Minister’s visit to Kyiv, The Commonwealth Government announces $100 million in additional military assistance to Ukraine, including the delivery of 14 M113 armoured personnel carriers and 20 Thales-built Bushmaster protected mobility vehicles. See more here.
    • The Commonwealth Government has announced that from 1 July 2022, procurement required from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under the Commonwealth Procurement Rules will double 20 per cent, up from 10 per cent. See more here and here.
    • BAE Systems is providing 10 internships in Melbourne and Adelaide, following a successful trial with STEM Returners in 2021. The positions will be engaged in some of the biggest programs that the company is delivering for the Australian Defence Force. See more here.
    • QinetiQ Australia has launched an 18-month Graduate Development Program to commence February 2023. The Program offers graduate engineers and consultants the opportunity to work across leading defence projects across QinetiQ locations, including Melbourne. See more here.
    • Leidos-led intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (Joint Project 2096 Phase 1) project achieves final operating capability. Defence announces Leidos will continue as the prime for the next two tranches of the project, worth $95 million. See more here.
    • In collaboration with DMTC, Quickstep have begun a jointly funded project with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) that will identify, analyse and test high temperature materials to support the development of future hypersonic aerostructures. See more here.
    • Airbus has confirmed the appointment of a new chief representative for Australia and New Zealand. See more here.
    • The Naval Shipbuilding College has partnered with AIDN to expand its services. SMEs will now have direct access to NSC’s Workforce Register and JobsPortal, allowing recruiters to search and connect with qualified workers across Australia. See more here.
    • Thales Australia has entered into a collaboration agreement with global defence and security peer and EXPAL Systems S.A. The agreement aims to establish Sovereign Capability solutions in Australia for large caliber naval munitions. See more here.

      Industry Opportunities & Work Packages
      Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program

      The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.

      The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.

      Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.

      The Defence White Paper 2016 established “Enhanced Human Performance” as a key S&T theme for the future of Defence capability. Defence cannot meet this need on its own and is committed to nurturing the innovation community that has grown up around these important research priorities.

      Human Performance Week provides an opportunity for Defence, academia, industry, and other agencies to come together to discuss human sciences research and its application.
             In 2022, Human Performance Week brings together two events:

      • The Defence Human Sciences Symposium (DHSS), the principal Australian forum for those interested in the application of human sciences research to enhance Defence capability, an

      • The Human Performance Research Network Symposium (HPRnet). HPRnet is an established network of universities that draws together multidisciplinary teams from around the country who are co-invested in the delivery of significant outcomes for Defence. The symposium brings together existing network members and those with an interest in human performance to hear about the latest developments in human performance research for the military.
