Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence

Hi there,
Welcome to the ADA Defence update for this week!

ADA would like to thank Suttons Tools for hosting a fabulous Morning Tea event at their Thomastown facility yesterday morning. All of those who attended were treated to an informative session regarding the “hidden Australian success story” that is Sutton Tools. A family run company, founded in 1917, they are now on the fifth generation of the same family with a workforce of over 500 staff in multiple countries around the world and an annual revenue of $175M. The Thomastown facility turns out 10,000 drill bits alone each day, as well as many other products and 70% of what they produce is exported overseas.

We were then taken in groups around the facility to see the work flow and capabilities of this very impressive family run business.

The morning was capped off with a great spread of food and terrific networking amongst those who attended in the SMART centre, which is a show piece for Industry 4.0 principles to improve productivity. A big thank you to Peter Rollauer for organising this event and to the owners Peter and Rob Sutton for hosting ADA members.

Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members.

We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Concept Design Partners Announced for South Australia’s New Nuclear-powered Submarine Construction Yard

The Government continues to progress Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine program, this week announcing the concept design partners for South Australia’s new Nuclear-Powered Submarine Construction Yard (NPSCY).

Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) and an AECOM and Aurecon Joint Venture have been announced as the design partners for the NPSCY.

KBR has extensive experience in supporting design and project management for defence infrastructure facilities across the nation and will design the area of the NPSCY that will be used for steel processing and fabrication facilities.

The AECOM and Aurecon Joint Venture will deliver the concept design for the rest of the NPSCY site which will support outfitting, consolidation and commissioning of Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

The design teams collectively bring together nuclear infrastructure specialists and experienced personnel from previous shipyard infrastructure projects at Osborne, Henderson and in AUKUS partner nations.
Primes and Australian Department of Defence Support New Supply Chain System that Cuts SME Costs and Compliance Burden

Thousands of Australian SMEs will have the opportunity to work under one supply chain system that will slash red tape and the costs of doing business with the Australian Department of Defence and major primes in the nation’s defence sector.

The system emulates a successful program in the United Kingdom and has already been adopted locally by the Department of Defence and companies including BAE Systems Australia, Raytheon Australia, Babcock Australasia (Babcock), Lockheed Martin Australia, Boeing Defence Australia, and Saab Australia.

Known as JOSCAR, the UK system currently comprises two dozen major defence companies and 6,000 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and constitutes a supplier management community that has slashed compliance and administration costs for UK buyers and suppliers.

“Australian SMEs now have the opportunity to secure the same benefits through the introduction of a standardised and simplified approach that has the endorsement of a number of major primes,” said Tom Maund, Country Manager of Hellios Australia, the UK-based supplier information and risk management company that has developed the new system.

The system offers a ‘one to many’ solution where a supplier only needs to fill in the JOSCAR questionnaire once, even if it supplies multiple defence primes and the Department of Defence.

Industry has welcomed the new system and the prospect of lower costs passed on to members of the SME community.
