Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence

Hi Juanita,

These are busy and interesting times for our members and everyone in the defense industry: -

Avalon 2023 is in less than 3 weeks. It was last held in 2019, due to the Covid19 pandemic, with 38,952 attendances across the dedicated trade and industry sessions and 698 participating companies. This year's event promises to be even bigger.

In August 2022 the government commissioned the Defence Strategic Review in August 2022 to be led by the former Minister for Defence, Professor the Hon Stephen Smith and former Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK AFC (Ret'd). The handover of the review report to the government is imminent and the government's response is expected in March 2023.

Also, in March, we expect the much anticipated AUKUS announcement regarding Australia's submarine plans when the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, meets with US President, Joe Biden, and UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, in the US.

Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members.

We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Australia to Upgrade Growler Electronic Warfare Planes

The Government is upgrading the EA-18G Growler capability through Project AIR 5349 Phase 6 - Advanced Growler, providing the RAAF with critical world leading technology for the future.

The EA-18G Growler is an electronic attack aircraft capable of disrupting, deceiving or denying a broad range of military electronic systems, including radars and communications.

Upgrades include:

  • Cooperative development of the Next-Generation Jammer weapon system with the United States Navy to gradually replace the ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System
  • Aircraft modifications including sensor upgrades
  • Anti-radiation missile war stock.
  • New longer-range and more advanced anti-radiation missiles.
  • Upgrades to the electronic warfare training ranges capability
  • Facility upgrades at Amberley near Brisbane and the Delamere Air Training Area near Katherine in the Northern Territory.

The project will ensure commonality with United States Navy aircraft.

World leading Australian radar company CEA Technologies has been awarded a $277 million contract to provide advanced capabilities for Australia’s electronic warfare ranges.

The contract will include a number of fixed and portable emitters to support training exercises and strengthen capability across the joint force.

It is the first contract to be awarded under Phase 6, which has an approved budget of over $2 billion.
