Enabling Members to do Better Business in Defence

Hi Juanita,

The current escalation in Ukraine and the potential for war in Europe makes us realise more than ever the importance of Defence Industry. We greatly appreciate the importance of all those businesses contributing to our Australian Defence capability.

We also acknowledge events of the past!

The 19th February marked the 80th anniversary of the first attack on the Australian mainland during WWII.

Shortly before 10am on Thursday, February 19, 1942, the first of two surprise Japanese air raids led to the sinking of a number of ships, decimating the allied air defence capability in Darwin, killing more than 240 people – more than half of them US personnel – and wounding up to 400, about 200 seriously.

The Japanese, concerned that the allied naval and air capabilities based in Darwin could pose a serious threat to their planned invasion of Timor on February 20, planned to neutralise this threat by launching an air attack with many similarities to the attack on Pearl Harbor only 10 weeks earlier.

Ceremonies were held to commemorate the bombing of Darwin.

We are here to help and advocate for our members. We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Last week BAE Systems Maritime Australia  released an industry survey for an Australian Maritime and Industrial Power & Energy Research Centre (AMPERES) and is seeking your input.

BAE Systems is working with the Commonwealth of Australia to explore the potential establishment of an Australian Maritime and industrial Power & Energy Research (AMPERES) Centre.

The survey purpose is to assess the benefit and applicability of AMPERES for Australian industry.
AMPERES aims to provide a national capability in high power and energy research technologies.
The survey is open to both academia and industry across Defence and wider Power & Energy sectors.

  • extend the RAN requirements into the broader maritime sector; and
  • have application in high power and full power technology development across all industry sectors (e.g. renewables, mining, etc.) - not just Defence.

Benefits that are anticipated to flow from such a facility include:

  • creation of jobs and Suitably Qualified Experienced Personnel (SQEP) supporting innovation in power and energy;
  • to increase the capability of power and energy Subject Matter Experts (SME)s including increased export opportunities;
  • long term participation in naval platform development;
  • leading edge technology research into high power and full power energy systems for application in multiple Defence and industry sectors; and
  • development of a pure and applied research capability in conjunction with Australian Universities.

Survey purpose:

  • The survey is open to both academia and industry across Defence and wider Power & Energy sectors.
  • The survey will assist in identifying what will be most valuable in the AMPERES concept to assist Australian industry.
  • The survey will assist in validating the current industrial capabilities in Australia relevant to this sector.
  • The survey will assist in quantifying the benefit for industry from AMPERES
  • The survey consists of 15 questions - mostly multiple choice with a handful requiring a short text response
