Last week, the Jobs and Skills Summit was held, bringing together Australians including unions, employers, civil society and governments. They agreed on some immediate actions to address economic and workforce challenges that we all face.

Working with these key stakeholders at the Summit, the Government has agreed to 36 immediate initiatives. View the Jobs and Skills Summit Outcomes document for details.


Opportunities for SMEs in the defence industry will continue to grow and we are here to help and advocate for our members. We would also like to hear from you if you have any news or stories about your business that may be of interest to other businesses and organisations.

APPLICATIONS OPEN
Supply Chain Uplift Program - Victorian Land Systems Fund

The Defence and Aerospace team is pleased to advise that applications are now open for the Supply Chain Uplift Program (SCUP).

The SCUP is part of the recently announced Victorian Land Systems Fund (VLSF) and will support Victorian defence industry businesses to work with Hanwha Defense Australia as part of its supply chain. The program will help build businesses’ capabilities so they can help Hanwha deliver the Commonwealth Government’s $1 billion Land 8116 Self-Propelled Howitzer program.

Businesses can submit their applications and gain further information about the program (including Guidelines, FAQs and an online application form) here.



AusTsec Austalian Training, Simulation & Education Conference Program Announced

The inaugural AusTsec Australian Training, Simulation and Education Conference at Land Forces 2022 has announced its program featuring expert speakers from the Australian Army and defence industry.

The keynote address will be presented by Major General Jeremy King, Head Land Capability, Land Capability Division, Australian Army, and the opening briefing will be presented by Brigadier Glenn Ryan, Director General Training and Doctrine, Forces Command,
Australian Army.

ASDAM Acquires TAE Aerospace and RUAG Australia

On the 1st September, ASDAM announced the acquisitions of TAE Aerospace and RUAG Australia, which join Marand and Levett as part of the ASDAM Group. ASDAM has established an industry leading Australian sovereign industrial capability in engineering, advanced manufacturing and sustainment across defence, aerospace and industrial markets.

Steve Sargent, Chairman of ASDAM, said, “Marand, Levett, TAE and RUAG Australia are all outstanding businesses in their own right. Their combination within ASDAM creates a leading Australian engineering and sustainment partner across aerospace and defence programs. ASDAM’s role is to provide continued access to capital and resources to build and grow Australian sovereign industrial capability.”
Defence Industry Workforce and Skills Taskforce

A joint State and Commonwealth taskforce will be established to ensure defence projects in South Australia will have a highly skilled workforce to draw on. The projects are underway and already planned for, and critical to Australia’s national security.

South Australia will be central to the delivery of some of the largest and most complex defence projects ever undertaken in Australia, including the Hunter Class Frigates, and the Life of Type Extension of the Collins Class submarines.

Current modelling projects the state’s shipyard workforce will grow from 2,800 to 5,000 by 2027 and to 9,000 by 2037.

The new SA Defence Industry Workforce and Skills Taskforce will bring together key stakeholders from government, unions, universities, training providers, business and industry to develop solutions to the most critical challenges.

Annual Networking & Golf Day
Friday, 9th December at the Medway Golf Club

This event will consist of a morning session of networking and industry briefings, set amongst an amazing backdrop with morning tea and lunch. For the golfers, and also the non-golfers amongst us, there will be an Ambrose golf competition in the afternoon and then a dinner and further networking in the evening.

This will be an enjoyable and informative day with the opportunity to meet others in Defence.

    • Through DMTC, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) has released a request for proposal seeking innovative applied research proposals supporting development of high temperature structures and sub-assemblies. Proposals are due 9 September. See more here.
    • DSTG is looking to make direct contact with leadership in Humanities and Social Science focused faculties to gauge interest in working with them to better understand extant capabilities in analysing Socio-Technical Futures. See more here.
    • Defence is partnering with the maritime industry and academia to establish a world-leading research facility for Biofilm Research and Innovation. Research support will include experts from several international and domestic universities including Swinburne University of Technology. See more here.
    • Defence announced a new partnership between the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Department of Defence and the Phoenix Australia Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health has led to world-first research and the development of an innovative new treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).     • The Victorian government has announced $10 million in grants for SMEs to aid them in joining the supply chain for the $1 billion LAND 8116 Self Propelled Howitzer program in Victoria. See more here.
    • Titomic Limited has partnered with Repkon to expand the market footprint in the Middle East. Repkon will sell Titomic’s manufacturing systems, consumables, and service contracts across the defence and aerospace sector in Turkey, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. See more here.
    • Lockheed Martin Australia’s Research and Development team, STELaRLab, in collaboration with the RAAF and DSTG, successfully tested Integrated Air and Missile Defence decision support capabilities using a live, virtual, constructive training system. See more here.  
    • Aerospace composites manufacturer Quickstep agreed final terms for a multi-year $151 million order from Northrop Grumman to supply centre fuselage components for the F-35 joint strike fighter aircraft. See more here.  
    • RUAG Australia, Honeywell International sign an agreement for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter wheels and brakes. See more here.  
    • Advanced Composite Structures Australia is investing in the development and manufacture of ultra-high temperature composites for hypersonic and space structures to enable sustained travel periods at hypersonic speeds by flight vehicles. See more here.
    • EOS subsidiary, SpaceLink, has signed a Cooperative R&D Agreement with the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command Technical Center (USASMDC-TC) to explore alternative space communications pathways. See more here.

    • Boeing has found several Australian companies to manufacture parts for its JP 9102 defence satellite communications program. See more here.
    • Applications are open for Round 2 of the Vic Nodes Demonstrator Grants, with node: industry co-funding of up to $300,000 available for projects that will result in space-related research that will drive innovation for the Victorian industry. See more here.

      Industry Opportunities & Work Packages
      In partnership with the Victorian State Government, Lockheed Martin Australia manages a secure facility designed to enable Victoria’s innovation community to better engage with classified Defence and National Security programs. The first facility of its type in Australia, the Victorian Common User Facility is a key initiative in creating new business opportunities for Victoria’s innovation sector.

      Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program

      The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.

      The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.

      Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.

      The Defence White Paper 2016 established “Enhanced Human Performance” as a key S&T theme for the future of Defence capability. Defence cannot meet this need on its own and is committed to nurturing the innovation community that has grown up around these important research priorities.

      Human Performance Week provides an opportunity for Defence, academia, industry, and other agencies to come together to discuss human sciences research and its application.
             In 2022, Human Performance Week brings together two events:

      • The Defence Human Sciences Symposium (DHSS), the principal Australian forum for those interested in the application of human sciences research to enhance Defence capability, an

      • The Human Performance Research Network Symposium (HPRnet). HPRnet is an established network of universities that draws together multidisciplinary teams from around the country who are co-invested in the delivery of significant outcomes for Defence. The symposium brings together existing network members and those with an interest in human performance to hear about the latest developments in human performance research for the military.
