There are some great opportunities for industry to be involved in knowledge sharing - including Virtual International Trade Shows this month... see below for more details.

Last week the Australian Government released a new draft AIC contractual framework and assurance policy in order to deliver and develop more Australian Industry Content (AIC) in all Defence projects. With a new contractual and assurance framework there is sure to be more work kept in Australia. As a part of the new approach there will also be a review into the Australian Standard for Defence Contracting (ASDEFCON) to be overseen by Minister Price, see more information here.

ADA-Vic will be putting together a response to this, guided by members feedback. We will be releasing a feedback framework for you to share your opinion with us shortly (on the new AIC contractual framework and assurance policy). Then we will collate and feedback to the Minister for Defence Industry.

AIC has been a sensitive topic of conversation amongst all stakeholders within Defence, Government and industry for some time.

Aligned to the requirements of the 2019 Defence Policy for Industry Participation, Defence is introducing:

a risk-based AIC assurance framework that includes the independent AIC Plan audit program; and,
an enhanced AIC contractual framework.

Defence has engaged PWC to complete an analysis of Defence’s contribution to the national economy.
Team Defence Australia will have no physical presence at overseas trade event for the remained of this calendar year. It is planning to attend IDEX (Abu Dhabi 21 – 25 February 2021) and IMDEX (Singapore 18 – 20 May 2021).
EOIs are open and close on 5 October 2020 for Team Defence Australia’s virtual presence at AUSA Now and Naval Online. Applications can be submitted via ICN here. ADA-Vic and VDA Digital Alliance present an opportunity for our members to "Pitch Defence" with a particular interest in information warfare, EW, C2, Cyber and Logistics.

We are looking for 12 SMEs to give a 2 minute pitch to provide awareness of their key local capabilities.

The session will be held on Friday 9th Oct at 0900 -1100. Successful nominees will be notified by Wednesday 7th October.

The Event

MAJGEN Marcus Thompson the Deputy Chief of Joint Capabilities (CJC) and Head of Information Warfare Division has kindly offered to support a session where we provide an opportunity for a dozen companies to present their local capability to both Defence and the primes that typically supply major capabilities.

A number of you would have seen MAJGEN Marcus Thompson present recently at the ADESIA webinar and that he is a passionate supporter of industry engagement as an extension of capability. Programs sponsored by CJCs usually have significant local content as they are highly integrated into the ADF systems and capabilities, and awareness of local capabilities can help steer thinking by customers and primes. MAJGEN Marcus Thompson at the ADESIA session along with the Defence Ministers recent comments to industry, emphasised the Defence Industry Security requirements for the whole supply chain. With this in mind we are planning to have representation at the session from the Assistant Secretary, Security Policy & Services area, to update us on supply chain security and recent changes to the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP).

Similarly, we have invited Dr Paul Gaertner join us to provide an update on DST STaRShot in the Agile Command and Control arena. At nearly every session attendees becomes aware of a capability locally they didn’t know about.

At the session we will continue our series of prime supply chain presentations as many of the opportunities will have SMEs engaging with primes to undertake major capabilities. In this session Chris Hess will provide an update on how to engage with the Lockheed Martin Global Supply Chain.

While it’s been a challenging year to date, we’re excited to announce that the D+I Conference 2020 is going ahead in an online format due to COVID-19 travel and gathering restrictions, with all sessions streamed nationwide on 15 October 2020 including on the Defence Protected Network (DPN).

As travel restrictions are going to limit the presence of foreign delegations during the 2020 edition of Euronaval, SOGENA, the organiser of this trade show, proposes an online Business-2-Business (B2B) meeting event called Naval Online for these companies unable to attend in person.

Naval Online will take place from Tuesday 20th to Friday 23rd October 2020.

The Team Defence Australia is setting up a virtual delegation for the Naval Online event. Registration is organised as usual through the ICN gateway here
