$1.3 Million Grant Funding Awarded to Australian Businesses
Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP has announced more than $1.3 million in grant funding to boost the export capability of six Australian small businesses.
Victorian-based business The Smart Think Australia will use its $227,686 grant to expand its hard-armour production line by purchasing capital equipment to increase its manufacturing capability to meet international market demand.
Quantx Labs in South Australia will receive $240,000 to purchase new plant and equipment. The funding will help reduce commercial prices by allowing Quantx Labs to integrate miniaturised microwave strip line electronics into their technologies.
Queensland’s Safe Defence was awarded $237,942 to establish a manufacturing facility for a unique technology-driven update to the Stokes Type Litter medical stretcher.
Mymodular in South Australia will use its grant of $240,000 to acquire specialised plant and equipment to construct extra low voltage lighting systems with data transmission capability, enabling the company to bring manufacturing in-house.
South Australia’s Ezy-Fit Engineering Group was awarded $240,000 to implement a new honing capability to manufacture specialised marine classified hydraulic cylinders.
PFG Group in Tasmania will use its $211,996 grant to improve its manufacturing capability for international defence contracts. Work will include establishing a second fabrication line, upgrades to facility security and delivering staff training.

Don’t Miss the 30 November Deadline - Apply Now for your Director ID
You need a director ID if you’re an eligible officer of:
- a company, registered Australian body, or registered foreign company under the Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act)
- an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act).
An eligible officer is a person who is appointed as either:
- a director
- an alternate director who is acting in that capacity.
You will only ever need one director ID. You don’t have to apply for another one if you become a director of other companies or corporations.
You must apply for your own director ID to verify your identity. No one can apply on your behalf.

From Defence: - Australians are encouraged to help protect the nation’s cybersecurity future, as the Australian Cyber and Security Centre (ACSC) – a key part of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) - launches its third annual Cyber Threat Report. See more here.
- Team Defence Australia will continue to release expressions of interest (EOI) for the industry delegations for tradeshows via the ADEO ICN Gateway page. Defence are currently accepting EOIs for IDEX and DSEI Japan and will open for Sea-Air-Space in the coming weeks. See more here.
- The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) recently launched a collaboration tool to help small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) engage and collaborate with publicly funded research organisations. The Collaboration Readiness Levels (CRL) will help Australian businesses connect with the research sector by determining the best way for SMEs to approach R&D with research partners. See more here.
- Defence associate secretary, Matt Yannopoulos has warned companies that Defence
will no longer tolerate poor behaviour by IT companies quitting one contract in favour of a better paying contract in defence. See more here.

- The Commonwealth Government has allocated $18 million to 12 projects under the
first round of the Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships program, including Victorian based companies Field Master Systems Pty Ltd DFSS, Revolution Aerospace, XROTOR Pty Ltd, and Swinburne University of Technology (AIR Hub). See more here.
- Swinburne University’s Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub) will develop and trial Australia’s first hydrogen-propelled drone thanks to the Commonwealth’s Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships program. The first

- The Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub) at Swinburne University and the National Institute for Aerospace Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University in Kansas, USA have signed a wide-ranging partnership agreement to boost local and international capabilities. See more here
- SPEE3D announced that it conducted a successful hot fire test of its 3D printed prototype rocket engine in Darwin in September. See more here.
- Titomic has launched a new 3D printer, the Titomic D623 medium-pressure cold spray 3D printer. The company has received purchase orders worth $270,000 from German and Spanish companies for the systems which complement its existing D523 printers. See more here.
- Hanwha Defense Australia (HDA) and Elbit Systems of Israel have agreed to support the Redback turret, built in Australia, for the global market. The evolved variant of the turret will be built in Australia and integrated with the Redback vehicle at Hanwha Armoured vehicle Centre of Excellence (H-ACE) in Geelong. See more here.
- The Australian Association for Uncrewed Systems (AAUS) is now calling for abstracts from individuals or organisations interested in presenting a paper at next year's
conference. Abstracts should include a presentation title and outline the topics and themes to be covered by the presentation. See more here.
- Universities Australia has released a plan to increase co-operation between the university and defence sectors with the aim of increasing the number of qualified professionals in areas currently suffering from skills shortages. See more here.
- Call for Submissions: Cyber Autonomy Gym for Experimentation (CAGE) Challenge 3 (CC3). The
Challenge is to present a new scenario tailored to some of the unique requirements of military systems. Final day for challenge submissions is 31 January 2023. Results announced 14 February 2023. See more here.

The first facility of its type in Australia, the Victorian Common User Facility is a key initiative in creating new business opportunities for Victoria’s innovation sector.

Australian Defence Export Office Pitch Training Program
The ADEO, in partnership with Marketing Entourage, have created a five week online pitch training program specifically for businesses looking to export defence and dual use goods and services. This training is fully subsidised for Australian Defence Industry businesses.
The program is specifically designed to improve the chances of success for Australian defence industry companies when engaging with opportunities to pitch their capabilities to foreign military and military suppliers. The training is delivered through a series of webinars, online modules and one-to-one pitch practice sessions.
Australian Defence Industry businesses are encouraged to apply by registering their interest at the link below. Multiple people from the same business can be included as a single application. Limited spaces are available on each cohort and the ADEO will prioritise businesses who have recently participated in an industry delegation with TDA.

The Defence White Paper 2016 established “Enhanced Human Performance” as a key S&T theme for the future of Defence capability. Defence cannot meet this need on its own and is committed to nurturing the innovation community that has grown up around these important research priorities.
Human Performance Week provides an opportunity for Defence, academia, industry, and other agencies to come together to discuss human sciences research and its application.

In 2022, Human Performance Week brings together two events:
- The Defence Human Sciences Symposium (DHSS), the principal Australian forum for those interested in the application of human sciences research to enhance Defence capability, an
- The Human Performance Research Network Symposium (HPRnet). HPRnet is an established network of universities that draws together multidisciplinary teams from around the country who are co-invested in the delivery of significant outcomes for Defence. The symposium brings together existing network members and those with an interest in human performance to hear about the latest developments in human performance
research for the military.

‘Defence and Industry Sovereign Capabilities for the Defence and Security of Australia’
The Defence and Security Symposium (DSS) is an annual event which brings together participants from Defence, Industry and Academia to exchange ideas and information and to connect with decision-makers from Defence, Academic Researchers and industry capability developers.
This symposium aims to bring together subject matter experts from Government, Industry, and Academia to discuss the development of Defence and Industry Sovereign Capability for the Defence and Security of Australia.
Some of the key capabilities identified include:
- Robotics, Autonomous Systems and Artificial Intelligence
- Power and Energy/ Green Hydrogen
- Information Warfare
and Cyber Capabilities
- Advanced Materials and Manufacturing
- Advanced and Networked Sensing
- Health, Nutrition and Technology Driven Training
- Quantum Technology for Sensing and Imaging, Communication and
Cryptography and Computing and Simulation
- Space Technologies.
This is an invitation to Academics, Defence research institutions, commercial organisations, and Military Personnel to attend and/ or offer papers in the field of developing Australia’s Defence and Industry Sovereign capability and associated disciplines.
